Teaching Fundamentals |

In an on going discussion on teaching fundamentals or the lack there of. I've been teaching players for 11 years the fundamentals first and seeing a big difference in players abilities when they enter middle school and high school.
At 4 Seasons Basketball School we start the first hour of each class with Ball Handling drills. Jump rope & frappier drills / poly drills, then we go into all our dribbling drills (about 25 different drills & moves) includes 2 ball drills. We then work on shooting fundamentals, BPM - Baskets Per Minute both left and right, & Miken Drill. We end our first hour with Form shooting drills, lay on our backs and shoot the ball with straight elbow - R/L, push ups & wrist curls, (we use a 3/4" poly pipe with a rope and weight attached. 2 minutes. The 2nd hour we work on shooting and individual moves. I have a list of moves we teach on the site at http://www.4seasonsbasketball.com/ look in the menu on the left under 4SBS Drills, "4SBS Phases". We start with phase 1 the beginners grades 1 -5 and go through phase 4, high school players. I've found by breaking these moves into phases it makes it more challenging for the player to move to the next level. The highly motivated player will work harder to achieve their goals. All kids/ players love a challenge. I coach these players in middle school & in AAU ball at many different levels. Although we live in a very small town about 2000 we have been competing with and beating the bigger towns and schools. Won a few championships too! I contribute this to the players hard work on their fundamentals. Stress Fundamentals First! Coach Mike Cox |
